Newark, NJ- New Jersey will once again give fugitives the opportunity to regain their peace of mind and resolve their looming legal problems and outstanding warrants. The fifth annual Fugitive Safe Surrender event begins on November 6th and ends Nov. 9th.
Hiding from the law is stressful and puts both you and your family in danger. Looking over your shoulder constantly, and being terrified of the knock at the door is no way to live, but if you have outstanding warrants that is your reality. The Fugitive Safe Surrender program is the perfect time to quit running from police, put your legal problems behind you and move on with your life.
Over the course of the four previous Fugitive Safe Surrender programs, 13,000 people turned themselves in and resolved their municipal and criminal charges.
Those eligible for the program must be U.S. citizens or legal residents; undocumented immigrants are not allowed to participate in the program. Safe Surrender is for all New Jersey residents, regardless of which county they live in.
The program gives anyone who has outstanding warrants for felonies or municipal charges the opportunity to turn themselves in, and resolve their legal issue without appearing in court. In many cases, people who participate may be able to avoid a jail sentence, and could see a significant reduction in their penalties and fines.
Criminal offenders with drug charges, theft or gun charges, just to name a few, are eligible for the Fugitive Safe surrender program. Even individuals facing violent criminal offenses can participate in the program, but they may be taken into custody if they have a criminal history or other violent criminal charges.
Individuals, who are behind on child support payments, have outstanding traffic tickets, or face other non-criminal municipal offenses are also eligible to participate in the Fugitive Safe Surrender Program.
It is important to note Safe Surrender is not amnesty, you must answer to the charges, but participating in the program will be viewed favorably and will garner leniency from the judge who hears your case. Many of the individuals who participate are often given probation and reduced financial penalties. Should an individual have trouble paying their fines, they will have the opportunity to work a payment plan.
In previous years, 99 percent of the individuals who turned themselves in were able to go home a free person. Previous participants have said in testimonials they felt safe and were allowed to leave the events as free individuals.
